Tanyards for Sale

Posted 20/12/25

The email originally sent to the Telegraph in the hope they might help me sell my house - a response to their question ‘are you struggling to sell your house?’:

Struggling to sell our property? Well, yes, indeed. After 32 years in the same house we need to downsize. Fondly assumed it would be a reasonably painless thing to do. In six months we have not had one viewer. Now headlines such as ‘Property Market On Life Support’ and ‘Is Rachel Reeves Destroying The Housing Market?’ seem to jump out of every web page. It sometimes feels like we are at the mercy of the media.

We have  painted, cleaned and decluttered. We have pruned, re-gravelled and weeded. Weeded until we can weed no more.  We aren’t open plan - we have zoned living spaces. But everywhere seems to be open plan. I struggle to see the appeal but the fashion police have decided that - along with brown furniture - a rambling old house is a bit passé.

We have changed agents and re-photographed.  I am a photographer so I have created a new brochure to try to convey how this very special house feels - not just how it looks. A lot of real estate photography seems utterly soulless and HDR’d out of existence.  But I am an artist with a point of view…. so I would say that, wouldn’t I? Probably out of step with current trends. But it’s fair to say we are now running out of ideas. Even Chat GPT seems at a loss.

Obviously I am writing in the hope that you might see fit to feature our beautiful home somewhere. It is on the edge of an area of outstanding natural beauty, not overlooked, yet 5 minutes from the station where a train will get you to London Bridge in just over an hour.
